Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

As the mankind nowadays lives longer it faces more health issues typical for the older age. Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases are both of that type. These two disorders have some features in common as well as they have differences.

Both diseases affect brain, they are common for senior people (those who are after 50 years old), chronic, and progressive (illness grow worse over time). Both conditions are neurodegenerative – they affect neurons (brain cells) causing their damage and death eventually. In the late stages they both can lead to dementia – defection of memory, general functioning, and orientation. Though, Alzheimer’s is more likely to cause dementia than Parkinson’s.

Despite all the above mentioned similarities the Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are two not related conditions with different symptoms, mechanisms, and management.

Alzheimer’s Specification & Treatment

This illness firstly affects the parts of brain responsible for memory and learning (entorhinal cortex and hippocampus). The early symptoms of this disease are very often confused with the natural aging. General intellectual and memory worsening can deepen without any influences on the coordination or ability to move. There is no cure from Alzheimer’s, but specific medications, for instance Reminyl, can improve the clinical course by improving awareness, memory, and ability to perform regular daily activities.

Parkinson’s Specification & Treatment

This condition primarily affects the part of brain called substantia nigra which corresponds to moving ability and coordination. The reasons are also connected with protein mutations in neurons. Such symptoms as muscle rigidity, tremor (even in rest), and slowed mobility are characteristics of this disease. In severe cases Parkinson’s can lead to immobility and in 50% of cases to dementia. Memory problems are not typical for this illness. Medical drug Dostinex is widely used for treating Parkinson’s.

Notwithstanding all the researches these two conditions are not studied completely. The real causes are still unknown and effective treatment is not found yet. Thousands of medics and scientists all over the globe keep working to find the cure from these diseases.
